Pompeii Today!
We hiked down to the port area to catch a bus. Pompeii is about 30 minutes outside of Naples.
It was another hot day and we were a little worried about being in the sun all day but we didn't want to miss out on seeing this incredible preserved city.
And it's a city - Pompeii is really big!
It must take a lot to keep it going as lots of areas and houses were closed. We still saw some pretty amazing things.
This is the smaller of two theaters.
These stones are how the Pompeii people crossed the streets - Because water and yuck would've been in the streets - They walked across on these stones. You can also see the grooves from chariots in the stones.
Here's a typical room in a Pompeii house.
And most houses had these gorgeous little courtyards in the middle
Mount Vesuvius is still an active volcano (hasn't erupted since 1944) and looms over the area.
This was a "take away" restaurant
Just resting near some 2000 year old columns. This area was called the Garden of Fugitives.
After we got back to the city we decided to see some sights nearby and stopped for a cafe and granita at Gran Caffe Gambrinus.
We went back to the hotel and then out for a drink and dinner. For our last night we went to Osteria da Carmela. A tiny place where the mom does all the cooking and the son is the server. It was delicious.
Tomorrow we head home.
