Palermo - Day 5 - Part 1

Being here on a weekend and finding things open takes a little strategy. We decided to walk around the city and stay local. We definitely wanted to see the markets and try the street food and today was our only day to do it.

We started with the Rick Walk which recommended we pop into several different churches along the way.
The first was the Church of San Domenico - This one was cool because Giovanni Falcone is buried here. He was the judge who helped take down the Mafia in Sicily. It ultimately cost him his life but his death caused the Sicilian people to rise up against the Mafia and now they (the Mob) have a lot less influence.

There was also a dog sculpture exhibit in the church which was kinda great.

Then we popped into The Oratory of San Lorenzo and saw a party version of Mary

And some angels with pizza bellies like ours…

These next three churches were right next to each other but very different.
Santa Caterna which was a convent until the early 2000s

The nuns weren’t allowed to see anyone so they spied on their families during mass from behind those upper dark windows. Here’s how it looks from the nuns’ side.

They had a nice courtyard to hang out in and they made sweets for people to buy - The church still offers sweets from a local bakery so we stopped for granita.

Next was La Mortorana which had very beautiful mosaics.

And then San Cataldo which has both Arab and Norman influences and is very plain compared to the others.

At the end of the walk we were so hot and tired we didn’t really want to eat but it was one of the reasons we stayed in the city so we trudged to the market and enjoyed some street food.
